Arranged publicity; wrote grant proposals, donor and employee communications; solicited auction donations and helped coordinate fund-raisers for The Arc Mid-South, which provides family support, career development and job placement services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. • Helped the 68-year-old 501c3 nonprofit agency net a record $37,720 from its Annual Awards & Benefit Gala • Wrote grant proposals that brought in $47K in fiscal 2017 • Gained The Arc Mid-South repeated exposure on local TV and radio stations and in RSVP, 4Memphis and Best Times publications.

2006 — 2008

-Wrote press releases, then pitched key media targets to gain substantial coverage for FedEx’s Trees for Troops events, award-winning safe drivers, International Graduate Logistics Case Competition and service center groundbreakings (including three print and three broadcast reports about Effingham, IL event.)

-Wrote, edited and designed a weekly employee newsletter, quarterly Information Technology newsletter and quarterly Sales magazine that promoted the company’s business priorities, success stories and fostered a more united FedEx culture.

-Mastered Adobe InDesign software to assume production of electronic newsletters, thus saving FedEx Freight’s departmental budget at least $15,000 annually.

-Developed PowerPoint presentations, audio and video scripts, talking points, emails that addressed sales, marketing, HR and IT initiatives. Also wrote Freight CEO’s weekly letter to Fred Smith that addressed people, service and profits.

-Researched business, political, labor and competitors’ news to produce daily morning email of freight-centric information for senior executives.

-Helped develop internal and external communications, including website content, for the $780MM acquisition of Watkins Motor Lines and its rebranding as FedEx National LTL.

National Editor/Washington Editor/Website Editor , The Commercial Appeal

-After being promoted at The Commercial Appeal from Washington Editor to National Editor, spearheaded in-depth news coverage of 9/11, the O.J. Simpson murder trial, Balkans war, Waco siege and Oklahoma City bombing.

-As National Editor, led team of three to four people responsible for providing national and international news. Prepared news budget for presentation at daily afternoon meeting, determined story placement and lengths, selected accompanying photos and graphics, assigned stories for editing and headlines while editing and writing headlines on several articles myself. Editing focused on grammar, spelling, punctuation, style and missing information, as well as providing context in terms of current events and social/political trends.
